Implants are used to fill gaps created by missing teeth. Maybe a tooth was knocked out by trauma, or the natural tooth had to be extracted because of an abscess or decay. Or maybe the adult tooth just didn’t develop. Whatever the reason, there could be an implant solution to your problem.
Implant treatment can give you back a highly aesthetic tooth that is fixed in place and is very strong to bite on. Review studies show good long term success rates of around 95% at 10 years and 75-85% at 20 years.
The implant refers to a titanium post which is placed in the jaw bone. This can be used to support a single replacement porcelain tooth (a crown) or multiple teeth (a bridge) The porcelain teeth are fixed in place so that they don’t move when eating or speaking.
Implants can even be used to support a denture to give it better retention and stop it moving when you are eating.
There are advantages to implants over other methods of replacing teeth:
We must point out that not everyone is suitable for implant treatment and we can advise you on this and other options. Our missing teeth page here has further details.
We use implants manufactured by Straumann. These are 85% titanium and 15% zirconium. This combined alloy creates a stronger implant with better biocompatibility compared with titanium alone.
